You do not lose your CO miles or your $1000 if you don't get the upgrade. Of course you can't transfer back the SPG points, so that is a valid concern.
So now that I've committed to economy, can anyone speak to that experience? How many meals do they serve back there?

rkkwan apparently does this route a lot in Y. I've only ever done it in BF, either on an employer-sponsored trip or upgrading with my miles (on the formerly-affordable B fares
). In both classes of service there is a hot lunch/dinner, mid-flight snack, and pre-arrival breakfast.
