In answer to the questions int the post above (I'm too lazy to fiddle with quote feature right now):
If you were to choose one of the two, which one would it be?
** That's a tough one. In high season I would go with Amandari if only because of the dining concern mentioned earlier - it's very easy to get to Ubud and all the restaurants there. Outside of the high season I'm torn. If you haven't been to Bali I would consider Amandari; if you love the beach and hanging out by the water/pool then Amankila.
What accommodation are you in, and what accommodation would you recommend at each resort?
** At Amandari I had a garden suite, and I was told I was upgraded to one with a bale (#12), although that didn't appear to be an option on the web site. It had beautiful views of the adjacent rice fields and was very private. I was quite pleased with it.
At Amankila I booked an ocean suite and was upgraded to a pool suite. It's fantastic; I just wrote some comments about it in the Bali honeymoon thread. The ocean view is great and, in my mind, well worth the extra money. This is also because I saw a garden suite (one is converted to the massage room), and it felt a little claustrophobic with all the vegetation right up to the window.
I have read some reports that the furnishings and accommodations are a bit tired. Would you agree with this?
** Not really. The style in both places is simple but comfortable, and it fits the overall resort. Everything is in good shape. The lighting could be better at Amankila for reading though, both at night and during the day when there isn't bright light coming in the room.
How is the food? Did you try any restaurants in Ubud?
** Very good at both places, although pricey. I liked having the option of going to Ubud and not being "stuck" at the resort. In Ubud there is a place called Dirty Duck which was quite tasty. Just outside Amandari (an easy walk) is a warung (local restaurant) called Nasi Ayam that has very good satay and chicken with rice - super cheap too.
Would an evening arrival be an issue considering the distances from the airports?
** I don't know about driving at night, but it took about an hour to Amandari from the airport. At Amankila they say it can take up to 2 hours to get to the airport; the road here seemed busier, especially with slow trucks.
And lastly (for a solo traveler especially), are there good TV channels / in-room Internet available?
** Free Wifi worked great throughout both resorts. There's no TVs in the rooms, but I asked today and they'll bring one if you want, with a DVD player and satellite/cable.
Hope this helps!
