You should always make changes with the origional booking source. In this case, it should be the AS partner desk, which should be friendly and sympathetic so I bet you can get the miles back without the fees. When it comes to interline tickets, there is a lot of grey area. So all you need is maybe a few tries.

Yes, I used AS miles. No refund waiver has been made by DL yet for travel to Japan in April, just a change fee waiver. I just wonder as a practical matter what changes are allowed and whether I should make them through AS or DL.
