Assigned seats for parent & child in CW?

My husband and I are flying BA CW to London in May on two separate bookings-his res includes three children, ages 8, 10 & 15 and mine is for 12 year old and me. I don't want to pay $500+ for preselected seats.
BA website says that it will assign seats 72 hrs b/f flight for kids under 11. I'm assuming they will give husband and kids 8 & 10 seats together but not 15 yr old? Then we will just go online at 24 hrs b/f and find a seat for 15 year old, and also for 12 year old and me?
Any tips for how to improve our chances for seats relatively close to each other (we don't need to be three in a row) at t-24? We are on a 747 so there should be two cabins and we would like to be in the same one, if possible.
Btw, what's the advantage of upper deck?
Also, is there a way to link my separate bookings and is there a good reason to do so?
