The Mexican border is much better for that, as you can simply walk across, no ID for either country. Either way, int'l issues aside, this was a purely domestic segment, and thus a pure waste of our $.

I believe you still need a passport (at least the passport card) to get into Canada even though there's no ID check on your way out of the USA.
