If I wanted to flee the country unnoticed, I wouldn't fly out. I'd cross into Canada by land, and I'd only have to clear Canadian customs, since...wait for it...leaving the USA by land == no ID check.

I could almost understand this additional security at int'l gates to make sure someone doesn't buy a domestic BP under his name and an int'l one under a fake name, then proceed through security on the domestic and take the int'l, thus fleeing the country unnoticed, but I just can't see how the skys are more secure if they ensure I head to NYC and not Peoria.
