i was confirmed on the return leg on a Tuesday at time of request and got the outbound three days out for a Wednesday flight. it all depends on revenue management and when they decide to release seats. from the numerous threads on this that I read regarding this specific route, it appears that ex-EWR is a bit tougher to score the UG on Thurs + Fri and ex-HKG on Sundays.
Actually hardest days for upgrades are ex-EWR on Fri-Sat and ex-HKG Sat-Sun, but any day can be hard because this is a high traffic route with many business travelers and no competitions out of EWR for direct flights.
