Afraid its a conference i need to attend, so no time for sight seeing either direction - would dearly love to visit SF again, or pop in and visit my friend who lives in LA while i'm over, but timescales mean its strictly a there and back visit - hence i want to maximise my enjoyment of the experience.

Looks like LHR-LAS-LHR is the way to go - would have loved to try some other lounges etc, but much as I like the thought of trying AA transcon F from LAX to JFK, I think i'd rather go for the better food and nicer seat on BA's 747 in the new F cabin.
