If there is no conductor you are supposed to buy your ticket from the driver. All trams will have a driver

At all of the stops I saw, there were clear maps telling you what the upcoming stops were. You shouldn't plan on relying on the announcements/signs. I was on several trams where I could barely hear the noise from the speaker.
I don't know if the conductors sell the multi-day cards, or if you have to get those at a ticket office somewhere. I wasn't able to find a ticket office/kiosk/machine at the airport, and that was pretty surprising to me.
They only sell the one hour tickets on the trams so any other type of ticket needs to be bought in advance. I believe the Holland Tourism desk at the airport sells Amsterdam transport tickets, but I am not 100% sure. At the Central Station in Amsterdam there are GVB (Amsterdam public transport) ticket offices.
If you are not sure about your stop, just ask one of your fellow passengers. they are there to help!
