Experiences with calling ahead for room upgrade?

As far as the poster who just reached Gold Elite status, the benefit for an upgrade is based on what upgrade is available at the time of check-in (or really what upgrade may be available at the time your room is assigned, with your Gold staus noted at that time). This benefit does not cover upgrades to suites, though at times that can also be at the discretion of the particular property.
