Generally speaking, yes they are posted. Around the middle of the tram's inside, you'll find an electronic board that lists the name of the upcoming stop, as well as the subsequent 4 stops. The major exception is if you get one of the old-fashioned trams.

Old-fashioned trams make up maybe (??) 4% to 7% of all rides (their appearances are listed on schedules).

For most of the trams, their inbound route ends at "Central Station." For those trams, their outbound routes -- surprise! -- don't. Otherwise you need a map that lists end-stops (like a GVB map).
Finally, if you happen to have an iphone, pick up the free app '9292ov pro.' Definitely a handy app for public transport in AMS (and the rest of Holland I think).
