Amsterdam - Trams and OV-Chipkaart

What is the best way to keep track of what station is coming up next while on the tram? Are they announced or otherwise posted in any way?

Also, I see from pictures the trams have numbers, and a name. Does the name dictate the direction (end station) in which they are traveling?
