My experiences over ten years supports the fact every award stay I have had counts (the counter in the HHonors account) for status - given anywhere from 30 to 60 stays annually, probably a half-dozen award stays annually, this is not an exception, anything new, or unusual, it is SOP as required by the HHonors Terms and Conditions - which is probably why one or two that did not post were easily awarded by calling the Diamond desk.
Unfortunately, the bit you insist on quoting is -

To Qualify
Hilton HHonors Diamond Elite Membership will be awarded
to Members with 28 stays*, 60 nights* or 100,000 Base points earned during any calendar year. A "night" is a night that is part of a "stay," as that term is defined herein. Base points earned will count toward Diamond Elite tier qualification. Bonus points earned on Base points do not count toward Elite tier qualification.

Stays booked via "opaque" channels where the brand is unknown at the time of purchase are not Eligible Stays for the purpose of earning points, miles or stay credit toward Elite tier status, or the receipt of Elite tier benefits such as upgraded accommodations / amenities or access to health clubs.
