Wednesday night we got so many phone calls. "Did you buy salt?" "You've got to buy salt, the Japanese earthquake, there will be no more salt to buy EVER" "You need iodine, so eat salt - salt has iodine."
It was crazy. There was even a line up of people two blocks long Thursday morning at the supermarket that found a crate of salt in the back of the warehouse.
When my wife told them "You are crazy" their united response was "You foreigners don't understand... this is radiation you are talking about. Protect your family, protect your health yada yada yada"

Every neighbor is talking about it. One neighbor actually came to our door and told us that its our fault (wife is Japanese) that they have no more salt to eat ever. Seriously.
I love living in a hick town in China.
