Also, this very rarely happens to elites at Marriott since they guarantee the rooms and pay very dearly if they walk one.
I've never heard the higher end hotels pocketing the difference.. but I can see it being done at the mid-range to lower-range levels.. It will be up to the customers checking in to raise a fuss if that happens.
Elite members, hotels are going to have to bend backwards for.. imo, bad business rejecting an elite member vs. the public.
