Fair enough, but rules broken by US are no reason for AC to treat a passenger like cr@p. One airline's staff pissed off another's. How is that the passenger's fault?
Assuming the OP's story is accurate, then the AC rep should have politely explained the situation and should have tried to be accommodating, not with a J seat, but also not with a GTE boarding pass.
