Meh... OP will get no sympathy from me. Paid for Y, and flew Y.

Seems like US was "accommodating" so long as they didn't have to pay for a J seat. OP was US's problem due to their operational issues.

Frankly it's good to see the rules being enforced. Makes for a more transparent system.
