I fly TCON on 737s quite often and am almost always in the exit row aisle or window. I need the legroom on the redeyes home so I can catch a nap. As a Diamond, I am sometimes gate upgraded, but once it was to the bulkhead seat and it had insufficient legroom and I would have rather stayed in coach/Exit. If i get the gate upgrade to a bulkhead, I assume that my Exit seat has been given away immediately and if i turn down the upgrade, I could end up in some middle seat in coach - in which case I'd like to stay up front with limited legroom. I could either talk to the GA before upgrades start, or I could see about switching after i get assigned the bulkhead or I could try to simply change seats with whoever is in my exit/aisle/window seat. Any experience with these strategies? Unfortunately, I am only upgraded 20% of the time on the Monday am or Thursday redeye flights as a Diamond and almost never during the 5 day window.
