Perhaps SPG just needs to tell us more clearly that the promotion and its bonuses are good only for new bookings made during the specific timeframe...and not for stays already booked duriing that period. It may be in the T+Cs but you know how well-read those are.

That's my guess - but apparently it doesn't matter whether you have one reservation booked or 20 booked. If you booked them before the promotion, you have to cancel and rebook.

I know it's a mind-numbing hassle, as I've done this more than once. But most people would probably rebook their stays if it's a matter of a few thousands points here and there.
