Things may have changed, but I have checked bags through 10-12 hour layovers in LAX without having to recheck my bags. They may not do it if your flights are not last in/first out. I wouldn't trust any AA call center on the issue. These kinds of questions will invariably get different answers by different agents. The answer will be determined by the interpretation of the policy by the agent checking you in and the staff in LAX.
