That's about when I pretty much stopped using the system. The F was the Independent Line Sixth Avenue Express from Queens, the E was the IND Eighth Avenue Local also from Queens both running along 53rd with the west end of the trains being Fifth or Lexington and the east end being Madison or Third with everything coming together at West 4th Street with the A.
The BMT Broadway Local ran from downtown up across the river to Astoria with the change at 59th to the IRT Lexington Avenue Line. The Woodlawn train ran to Yankee Stadium and then the cemetery and the Flushing Line went to Shea. Now it is all letters and numbers. Something has been lost when nobody in Brooklyn uses the terms "West End Express" or "Sea Breeze Local" anymore and substitutes something like N or Q or some such letter or number.
And it only cost a dime at the turnstile.
