Do crew and pilots NOT have to go through body scanners?

I've been traveling quite frequently lately, and going thru FAT again this morning, I was "selected" to go through the body scanner. The guy in my line in front of me was also selected, and one guy from the other line. As I stood there, I opted out. I was put into a holding area for almost 5 mins. As I waited, the two guys that were also suppposed to go thru the scanner, went thru the regular metal detector and I waited for my pat down. Then I see a few crews coming thru. ALL of them were allowed to go thru the metal detector and NOT the body scanner. Where is the random selection process here? Are they exempt?? If not, obv there needs to be more of a random selection process here. I am 90% pat down now, as I seem to always be selected. Just wanted to know if you all knew if ALL are supposed to be selected at random or are certain people exempt?

Thanks
