While waiting for my gate-checked carryon yesterday, I saw what looked like sandbags coming down the conveyor belt off the plane. I had never seen this before - are these used for weight and balance? The flight (CRJ) was completely full and probably 30 of the passengers had gate checked luggage, so maybe there wasn't enough truly heavy luggage in the back?
