Can you explain what purpose is served by linking hotel and event registrations?

Are hotel guests guaranteed spots at the event?
Are hotel reservations subject to cancellation if not associated with paid event registration?
Do guests with hotel + event registrations get some extra benefit?

Or is this just so that the organizers can have a better idea of where people are staying for shuttle planning purposes?
