It changes to a C or A fare which indicates upgrade, which will then look back at the original fare basis for earning requirements. My ticket last week somehow got the original fare bumped to Y, so I earned some extra EQP but EQP are mostly a non-event to me as I mostly purchase Q level fares.
The A fare can also be a paid revenue fare, but the underlying fare basis will be different than from an upgrade.
That's what I'm trying to figure out, because I often buy the cheapest fares and use miles to upgrade. And somehow I have a lot more EQPs than EQMs which led me to ask the question. At this rate I've got a much bigger jump on hitting EXP this year because of the additional EQPs, which is a nice surprise, and I'm trying to understand why.
