Based on previous experience I would not be surprised to find BA did not disclosure this when the OP selected the upgrade, which is somewhat sharp practice IMO, but then BA.com does not make it easy to find the full conditions of any ticket and heaven help you if you want to look them up after purchase because you're considering changing time or date.
Yes, Thats exactly the situation I found myself in , Whilst the origional ticket was cheap , the conditions are always changeable for a change fee and the change in ticketing cost. I have often changed the return leg due to changes in plans.
