Ignorance is most likely the reason for this "tight window"
US Airways have no direct flights to Japan, they only sell codeshare flights so my guess would be that it is simply not that important for them.
I have a reservation to Tokyo mid-April and I am not really sure what to do.
Those poor people in Japan
