But it's fair to question how exactly the miles will be used.
I believe with other organizations (MSF for one), the miles can be used to transport relief workers, or possibly aid (food, blankets, items which Japan desperately needs now). Once the miles are accumulated, it is likely that Red Cross decides how to use it and will work with Aeroplan for redemption. Yes, in this case, I hope there are no fuel surcharges added on to bookings.
Sorry if my original post was cranky, but IIRC Aeroplan is the only NA travel organization directly contributing to relief efforts. While I commend others (UA -and have posted links to UA/COs efforts, SPG and AA) are encouraging donations through gifting of miles, I believe Aeroplan is doing their part in helping. I find jokes about blackouts and use of toasters and bemoaning of why Aeroplan is not offering miles for donations tacky in this situation.
