I'll go against the grain here and add in some good words for Aeroplan.

Right now if you try to book a ticket from Canada to NRT, there's lots of availability for only 75,000 points. (I tried a dummy booking leaving tomorrow and returning a week from now, and another departing tomorrow returning Saturday.) The taxes for such bookings come to only $238.71. C & F fares are available for the usual 100K or 120K miles (and taxes in F go down to $117.06 ).

So say what you will about Aeroplan, it's crappy availability 355 days out and the unreal "taxes" - in a time where people probably really really really need flights unexpectedly, Aeroplan has quietly come through. ^
