link to their release. From the notice, they are also matching the donations of their employees to Red Cross
"Aeroplan will also match its employees’ individual cash contributions to the Canadian Red Cross while Groupe Aeroplan will match cash contributions to the Red Cross or the Red Crescent from its employees worldwide."
The miles collected will be used towards relief efforts in Japan.
I agree that AE is clearly doing far more than donating 1,000,000 AE miles. But THEY are the ones who put the 1,000,000 miles front-and-centre in the headline. They are the ones who buried the cash donation matching in the middle of paragraph 2.
So please, do not roll your eyes at those who missed this. It's a major communication failure on AE's part to focus on the 1,000,000 miles.
