It really depends on which airline you fly, maybe the SFO flight was on UA. AC had the largest fuel surcharge so you get dinged everytime you book an AE/AC ticket. Try flying UA, US or CA and it will be cheaper. Going TATL you may consider Lufthansa and you will find it cheaper as well.
