kathnunley,
Don't be sorry to bring things up.
I think most here was only trying to give you suggestions on looking towards the positive at the beginning and suggesting what you can do under such a situation before things got twisted around.
IMHO, had you stayed at another hotel from another hotel chain, you probably would have had a similar experience to the one you had reported here.
I've already heard accounts of stranded travelers having to pay $$$'s for extra night(s) at hotels because they were stranded at non-discounted rates. I suspect every major hotel chain were not offering discounts somewhere out there.
I've also heard accounts those in similar situation as yours attempting unsuccessfully to get discounted or free water. Some even contacted their own credit card companies, only to be turned down.
I know your frustrated, but you seriously need to calm down.
People here are trying to give you practical advice on what is it you can do, but you're blowing them off without listening to them with your attitude.
Someone was on the money about you needing needing to ask for clarification, and you seriously need to.
And, you need to be realistic that things don't always go your way.
You posted there are NO phones but the hotel can place a call for you.
So, I'm asking you now, "How can there be NO phones if the hotel can place the call for you?"
I've checked into hotels where phones were down, I was not told they were down at the front desk.
I called the front desk to inquire why I can't dial out from my room. I was told that the phones did not work, but the hotel could place the call for me. And, I had them do it for me.
Every one of my calls placed by the hotel went thru. I was charged the regular rate for those calls.
To me, the part on not being told is "spilled milk." If it happens, no big deal, get over it quickly and figure out what you can do about your situation.
IMHO, your attitude determines many things. I really think your stay could have been more pleasant (e.g. phone calls), but you blew it because you were too upset over the wrong thing.
