Didn't experience the EL end of this, but in regards to the Hilton Amsterdam (Apollolaan) I have used hotel services well after check-out with no issues at all. On the contrary, the hotel manager (assuming front desk manager-on-duty) and the concierge went out of their way to accomodate...
I spent a few nights there this summer during the World Cup. We had a 9pm overnight train to Prague. We were granted a late check-out until 2:00pm, I believe. However, we left right after breakfast for some site-seeing around the city. I told the front desk what we were doing and they asked my permission to remove the luggage from the room and place into secured storage if we weren't back by 2:00pm. Since our luggage was already packed, I said yes.
We ended up at Museumplein where what seemed like the entire city was watching the Netherlands-Brazil World Cup game on giant tvs. It was an amazing experience (even as a non-soccer fan). Needless to say, we blew the 2pm check-out time.
When we arrived back at the hotel around 5pm, drenched in sweat from the 100+ temperatures, I asked the front desk for access to the baggage hold for a change of clothes and where the nearest public restroom was. The M.O.D. offered to let me use the shower facilities at the pool/spa and offered a cold bottle of water to help cool me down. She then said, "you have plenty of time before you leave for Central Station, why not take a dip in the pool and really relax?"
Let me tell you, that was NICE!
Also, not only was our luggage well cared for, but the concierge also kept my laptop backpack behind the front desk, in the safe, as opposed to keeping it with my luggage.
I couldn't have had a better experience with the staff, so not sure where the issue with the EL came from? Maybe just a bad attendant?
