I think, that regardless of chain, that you run the risk of having your reservation re-priced when you cancel a portion of it. That can depend on any number of things - whether one night is a weekday and the other is a weekend, availability between the time you made the reservation and the time you cancelled, and so on.

Basically, count me as not surprised.
