The flight from HNL to DEN lands at 08:50 and DEN to ORD departs at 11:50, so I have three hrs to kill and could take an earlier flight from DEN to ORD.

However, I now only have measly Silver on CO, as hardly any more business tavel to USA these days, so I assume there will be some charge to try to change to an earlier flight (if available) ?

On UA's site, however, it says none for their award tkts for non-status, but u said it's CO miles so I'm venturing the $50. Of course if you have checked baggage, then that's another issue. If you didn't, you might luck out waiting at the gate on standbye and maybe GA will give you brding pas w/out charging you. Watch the loads on the earlier flight/ and the weather in DEN/ORD to determine whether you want to spend $50 if accurate, or not.
