If you think about it, an uppercase L sort of looks like the symbol for the pound. Sounds like Avis just decided instead of saying GBP or instead of using a font that could display an actual pound symbol (which might not work for everyone everywhere, say on text-only emails), they chose the letter that looks most like the symbol they mean...
