Your situation is very similar to ours. We live in Orlando, but have a summer camp in Maine. We fly to MHT as much as 6 times each year, usually paying for those flights. Then we use our award tickets (from flights and RR Visa) for other travel - to Las Vegas and west coast cruise embarkation ports.
Likewise I have appreciated those at FT who have taken the time to explain and research the more complicated, less beneficial RR2. Our next two round-trips are still booked on Southwest and we will be using some award travel this year as well. But we expect to make some changes in the not-too-distant future and the info here is invaluable. Thanks!
I'd keep a close eye on other airlines and PWM fares. They are often as good as MHT as I live halfway between the two airports. No exp flying into Orlando but have family near RSW and have found competitive rates that vary as more cost effective then MHT one week to the next for PWM.
