This is high season for Hawaii. FYI, the Sheraton Royal Hawaii, Sheraton Waikiki, & the W Hotel Honolulu are available on Dec. 25th for 2 nights. It is then that everything is sold out even if you want to pay for a room. This is when the New Year's Eve crowd starts arriving. It's also when a lot of Japanese take their annual vacation (much like August for Europeans), and Hawaii is a popular destination for inbound Japanese traffic.

Check flight availability NRT/KIX to HNL for this time period and you'll notice many sold out flights, and this is one of the peak seasons for Japan originating travel, the other being the 1st two weeks in August.
