SF Bay Area TV news from several stations has extensive reporting of Fukushima plant status, because of large Japanese community and business/culutral affinity with Japan.
Anyway, they interviewed nuclear engineering experts (one of which is from U.C.Berkeley born in Japan) and common theme is continued worry about this plant b/c it is 40 years old (one of the oldest in Japan) and has 40 years of radiation buildup. It was constructed to withstand 6.1 Richter scale earthquake. The 8.9 scale obviously overwhelmed the multiple safety backups of the plant.
