Wire Hangers Confiscated by Security in San Jose, Costa Rica

After going through the WTMD in San Jose, CR a couple of days ago, the security agent on duty asked me to open my carry on bag, saying she needed to look at something inside.

The "something" ended up being the wire hangers on which all my freshly pressed clothes were hanging. She then told me they weren't allowed and watched as I spent the next few minutes carefully unwrapping, unbuttoning, "de-hangering" and attempting to refold all my shirts so they wouldn't be wrinkled when I got to my final destination (this was unsuccessful, as they were packed in a soft-sided carry-on ).

I travel with wire hangers in my carry-on all the time and this is the first time this has happened to me. One other time (St. Kitts), I came close to having them confiscated, but the security officer relented after I gave her a look of incredulousness.

Any thoughts?
