I ran into an interesting situation a few weeks ago on an Aeroplan J reward itinerary. Checked into a late night domestic flight ex-YYZ. On the way to the airport I received an ExpertFlyer notification that a J award seat opened up. Flight was R6 when I left the house.

Called Aeroplan and waited on hold 30 minutes. Got through and the agent held the seat but couldn't assign it to me as I already had a boarding pass in hand. Agent couldn't legally check me out either and I had no friends that were close to a computer that could do it for me. Frustrated I hung up and decided to deal with it at the gate. Agent had a J boarding pass for me immediately after explaining the situation.

I remember a thread a few months back on FT that I thought explained Aeroplan J tickets with non-confirmed J seats had priority for upgrades at the gate. Am I wrong?
