Will do a mileage run weekend to HNL 2 or 3 nights, and am seeking a hotel that has a decent pool for laps, near beach a plus, and am interested in Honolulu as a city too. Could rent car or not.

I'm independent traveler, more interested in swimming and local stuff, than touristy stuff. Is Waikiki really all pretty dense and touristy? Ideas?

Mahalo! Tom
The Hawaii Prince by the Marina (4* on Hotwire and Priceline in the Marina Zone) is out of the noise and next to Ala Moana Park. It has a nice pool. Every room is oceanfront. Unless you want to see crowds, a car is necessary to get away. I did some fine hikes but I would prefer to skip Honolulu and go to any other island. The lava is running at Kilauea and the beaches at the Waikoloa hotels are spectacular on Big Island - my fave.
