Not sure if it's recent but on 2 occasions in 2010 when we approached the CBP agent as a couple, I was told to move back behind the line while my other half was processed. When I passed through and was asked all the same questions he'd just been asked I was tempted to get snarky and reply "Same as him" but of course didn't! Since then we've just played along with their silly rules by doing our own forms and passing through individually
