YYZ-CDG fareshopping advice needed

I am starting preliminary research into a trip this Sept, or Oct. to France for myself,
brother and father. On initial checking at ITN and AC's website, it appears there is a premium to be paid for a direct YYZ-CDG flight as opposed to a connection at LHR.
(e.g. $1540 direct on AC vs $920 on BA or AF
connecting in LHR) Is this because YYZ-CDG is primarily a touristy route and AC can charge what the market will bear? Or are all Paris flights at a premium ? I expect that fares on these routes would have a "peak, shoulder, and low" season as well? Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated .(except suggestions to try Air Transat--sorry, not even on the radar, kids!) Not intending to redeem for rewards this time, either!
