I had two tabs open. The first tab was for a flight this Wednesday from LAX-DFW-ATL. I had booked this flight in January and I was checking to see how full the LAX-DFW leg was, as the upgrade hadn’t cleared. The second tab was for a ticket I had on hold from LAX-LAS later this month. Next, I called the ExP desk, and they did confirm the website had purchased a duplicate reservation in my name and had not purchased the LAX-LAS ticket, which was still on hold. They canceled the reservation, though as a side note they had already charged my debit card and said it would take some time (up to two billing cycles though probably faster) for the credit to appear. Fortunately that part is not a big deal for me but for some people it could be a huge problem.

Lastly, I asked to be connected to the AA.com support line because I wanted to support the problem. The guy I spoke to told me that’s a known problem and “we recommend you don’t use multiple windows, tabs or browsers”. Lesson learned and I won’t do it again, but I think it’s a pretty big security error that they are really blasé about.

I’m just putting it out there as a cautionary tale for everyone else. The ExP desk remedied the situation in a quick and courteous manner, and aside from me essentially loaning AA several hundred dollars for a billing cycle (far cheaper to them than their debt offering ) I wasn’t harmed.
