In that tab, I chose the purchase now option. Instead of purchasing my ticket on hold, it purchased a duplicate LAX-DFW-ATL reservation for Wednesday with an entirely new record locator (and at a hefty price I might add)....

Next, I called the ExP desk, and they did confirm the website had purchased a duplicate reservation in my name and had not purchased the LAX-LAS ticket, which was still on hold. They canceled the reservation, though as a side note they had already charged my debit card and said it would take some time (up to two billing cycles though probably faster) for the credit to appear. Fortunately that part is not a big deal for me but for some people it could be a huge problem.

Lastly, I asked to be connected to the AA.com support line because I wanted to support the problem. The guy I spoke to told me that’s a known problem and “we recommend you don’t use multiple windows, tabs or browsers”. Lesson learned and I won’t do it again, but I think it’s a pretty big security error that they are really blasé about.

I’m just putting it out there as a cautionary tale for everyone else. The ExP desk remedied the situation in a quick and courteous manner, and aside from me essentially loaning AA several hundred dollars for a billing cycle (far cheaper to them than their debt offering ) I wasn’t harmed.
I had the same issue last year. Web services was able to clear it up, but yes, AA.com does not play well with multiple tabs or multiple windows when making a reservation.

If I want multiple reservations visible at once, I now use different browsers (Safari and Firefox). Frustrating. (Not sure why they don't recommend multiple browsers, as I assume it's a cookie problem. If they're tying the purchase to your IP address or your computer, AA.com has serious issues which I have not encountered.)
