Sorry, doc, but I don't see the relevance of Saab 9-5 pricing to a road test review of the 9-3.

Like the VW Jetta, based on passenger room and cargo space the EPA rates the 9-3 as a Compact. It's a little smaller compact than a Jetta, true. Passing off European compacts as something better/bigger is old hat at National - recall the Full Size Elite ~2002-2009 Volvo S60? That's another EPA Compact.
