Actually, with *A RTWs (unlike some other schemes), the 'go towards one direction' rule really only applies in regard to continents -- or, to be precise, the IATA 'travel conferences'. Within any one TC, you can zig and zag, forward and backward, up and down to your heart's content, so long as you obey the stopover / transit conditions. One major problem with this strategy, however, is that you can quickly burn up your mileage and/or segment quotas.
