Thanks for the comments - 5AM in NYC and the jetlag has kicked in (that, combined with what seems like half the hotel running up and down the corridor screaming their heads off!).

It definitely wasn't loud enough to bother me in any way, but then I had headphones on for most of the flight. I'll try and compare after the next flight when I'm on the UD of a 747.

Given your handle I'm guessing you are EDI based? Are there not enough flights that would allow you to connect at LCY rather than having to overnight it? If you did want to there are lots of hotels to suit a variety of wallet sizes not too far from the airport, although none actually on site.
