I'm on CO at the moment FLL-EWR-MAN could change to MIA-ZRH-MAN.

It is such a world of pain to get a refund of excess YQ it would be safer not to bank on it. Rather than focus on the relative merits of CO over LX I'd focus on the misery of two medium length flights that is overcome by one short and one long flight. It's really personal taste.
