When thinking about things like this, I restrict the search to non-stops or directs. High-priced trips with connecting flights can often be purchased cheaper by using another carrier or buying two separate tickets

In your example, no one in their right mind would fly LAX-SYD via DXB, since it's longer via DXB and there are non-stops between LAX and SYD. However, I could see "sane" people buying this fare if they intend to stop over in DXB and continue on to SYD.
